Which driveway surface is right for you? Resin bound driveways are our most requested finish: a smooth, seamless, permeable surface in a wide choice of natural stone colours, with no loose gravel, no weeds and almost no maintenance. Resin bound is SuDS-compliant, so in most cases it needs no planning permission, and it can often be laid over a sound existing concrete or tarmac base, which keeps the cost and disruption down. Block paving is the classic Irish driveway: hard-wearing, easy to spot-repair, and available in a huge range of colours, patterns and borders; it suits period homes and anyone who wants a traditional look. Tarmacadam is the most economical option for large or commercial driveways and gives a clean, uniform finish that stands up to heavy use. Gravel is the lowest-cost option and drains well, but needs topping up and raking. Concrete is durable and low-cost but can crack and looks plain without imprinting.
Driveway cost guide (Dublin and Wicklow): every driveway is priced individually after a site visit, because the size, the condition of the existing base, drainage, edging, drop kerbs and the finish you choose all affect the price. As a rough guide only, in the current Dublin market tarmacadam typically starts from around 40 to 60 euro per square metre, block paving from around 60 to 100 euro per square metre, and resin bound from around 60 to 100 euro per square metre over an existing base, with a new sub-base or full dig-out adding to each. Do I need planning permission for a new driveway in Ireland? Usually not. Replacing or resurfacing a driveway to the front of a house is normally exempt development, and permeable surfaces such as resin bound and permeable block paving are the safest choice for drainage rules. If you are creating a new entrance or dropping a kerb onto a public road you will need to apply to the council, and we can advise on that.
How long does a new driveway take? A typical two-car driveway takes two to five days depending on the surface and whether the old base needs to be dug out. Resin bound over an existing base can be done in one to two days.
