Driveway Costs in Dublin 2026: Tarmac vs Block Paving vs Resin vs Gravel vs Concrete
The surface you choose has the biggest effect on what a new driveway costs, but the base underneath decides how long it lasts. This guide compares the five common driveway surfaces in Dublin and Wicklow: tarmac, block paving, resin bound, gravel and concrete. It covers rough prices per square metre, how long each takes to install, how long each lasts and the trade-offs, so you can narrow down the choice before a site visit. All prices are rough guides only; every driveway is priced individually.
Driveway costs at a glance
Surface | Rough guide per m² | Typical install time |
Gravel | about €35–65 (published 2026 guides) | 1–3 days |
Tarmacadam | from about €40–60 | 2–4 days |
Block paving | from about €60–100 | 3–5 days |
Resin bound (over a sound base) | about €60–100 | 1–2 days |
Imprinted concrete | about €85–135 (published 2026 guides) | 3–5 days plus curing |
Tarmac, block paving and resin figures are our own rough guides for the current Dublin market, with a new sub-base or full dig-out adding to each. Gravel and imprinted concrete figures are taken from published 2026 Irish price guides. Larger driveways cost less per square metre; small ones cost more because set-up, edging and disposal are a bigger share of the job.
Gravel: the cheapest option
Gravel is usually the lowest-cost surface and drains well. The trade-off is upkeep: it needs topping up and raking, it gets carried into the house and onto the road, and weeds come through unless there is a good membrane or stabilising grid underneath. It suits long rural driveways better than small urban frontages.
Concrete: durable but plain
Plain or brushed concrete is durable and relatively low-cost, but it can crack, stains easily and looks plain. Imprinted concrete adds pattern and colour at a higher price, but repairs are hard to hide. A sound old concrete driveway is often an ideal base for a resin overlay.
Tarmac: best value for larger areas
Tarmac is the most economical sealed surface for long driveways, yards and car parks, and it stands up to heavy vehicles. It is a single black or red finish and can soften in very hot weather. Built on a compacted 804 sub-base with good edging and drainage, it lasts 15 to 20 years.
Block paving: the classic Irish driveway
Block paving is hard-wearing, easy to spot-repair and comes in a huge range of colours, patterns and borders. It suits period homes and anyone who wants a traditional look. Its weaknesses are weeds in the joints and sinking where the base was poorly compacted, both of which come down to how it was laid.
Resin bound: low maintenance, fast to lay
Resin bound is a smooth, seamless, permeable surface with no loose stones and no weeds, and it can often be laid over a sound existing concrete or tarmac base in one to two days, which keeps cost and disruption down. Our resin driveway cost guide and guide to resin driveway problems explain what to look for.
How long does a new driveway take?
In South Dublin, a resin overlay on a sound base is normally finished in one to two days. A tarmac driveway typically takes two to four days, and block paving or any surface needing a full dig-out and new sub-base usually takes three to five days. Weather, drainage work, a dropped kerb or difficult access can add time.
What else affects the price
Beyond the surface, the biggest cost drivers are the condition of the existing base and how much has to be dug out and removed, edging and kerbs, drainage channels or soakaways, a dropped kerb, steps and walls, and access for machinery. A cheap quote that skips the sub-base or drainage is usually the most expensive in the long run.
