Why resin bound driveways suit Rathfarnham and Blackrock

Rathfarnham and Blackrock sit at the foot of the Dublin Mountains and along the coast of Dublin Bay. Both areas share a mix of period homes, 1960s–80s estates and newer developments, and driveways here have to cope with steady rain, winter frost and regular car traffic. Resin bound surfacing handles all three because water drains straight through the stones into the sub-base, so puddles and ice patches are far less common than on sealed surfaces like tarmac or concrete.

Platinum Paving Dublin works across South Dublin every week from our Dublin 12 yard. Rathfarnham, Templeogue, Churchtown, Dundrum, Blackrock, Booterstown and Mount Merrion are all part of our regular work area, so we are not adding travel time to the price.

We lay resin bound driveways, paths and patios using our own crew — no subcontractors — and every job carries a five-year written guarantee. We have been paving in Dublin and Wicklow for over twenty years.

How much does a resin driveway cost in Rathfarnham or Blackrock?

A resin bound driveway in South Dublin typically costs between €75 and €110 per square metre for the surface course, depending on the aggregate, the area and whether the existing base can be reused. The total project cost — including excavation, sub-base, edging and drainage — usually falls between €4,500 and €9,000 for a standard two-car driveway of 40–60 m².

If your current tarmac or concrete base is level, solid and draining properly, we can overlay it with resin bound. An overlay skips the dig-out, which cuts the cost by roughly a third and gets the job finished in a day or two rather than a week.

We price every job after a free site visit, because no two driveways are the same. The visit lets us check the base, measure accurately and discuss stone colours and edging options before we quote.

What affects the price

The main factors are the area in square metres, the aggregate you choose (natural stone costs more than recycled), whether the old surface needs digging out, drainage requirements, and any kerbing, steps or walls. A straight rectangular drive is simpler to lay than one with curves, islands or patterns, so shape plays a part too.

Resin bound driveways for period and estate homes

Many Rathfarnham properties — around Butterfield Avenue, Willbrook and Ballyboden — have generous front gardens with mature trees. Resin bound is one of the few surfaces that can be laid around tree roots without cutting them, because the permeable finish lets water reach the root zone naturally. It also comes in natural stone colours that complement older redbrick and granite façades better than plain grey tarmac.

In Blackrock, Booterstown and Mount Merrion, front gardens tend to be smaller and often slope towards the road. Resin bound's permeability means you may not need a separate drainage channel, which keeps the finished look cleaner and reduces cost.

Do you need planning permission in South Dublin?

Under Irish planning rules, you generally do not need planning permission to resurface an existing driveway. If you are paving a front garden that is currently a lawn, you should check with Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council. Permeable surfaces like resin bound are viewed favourably because they reduce rainwater run-off into the public drains, which is increasingly important under the council's climate-action plan.

We can advise on any planning questions during the site visit.

How the job runs

A typical resin bound driveway in Rathfarnham or Blackrock takes three to five working days from start to finish:

Day 1–2: We dig out the old surface (if needed), lay a compacted stone sub-base and set the edging.

Day 3: We lay the resin bound surface — mixing the aggregate and resin on site and trowelling it to a smooth, even finish.

Day 4–5: The surface cures. You can walk on it after about 12 hours and drive on it after 24–48 hours depending on the weather.

An overlay on a sound existing base can be finished in one to two days.

Stone colours and finishes

Resin bound driveways come in a wide range of natural stone colours — from warm golds and honey tones through to silver, grey and dark charcoal. You can also mix two or three aggregates for a bespoke blend. We bring stone samples to every site visit so you can see how each one looks against your house and boundary walls in natural light.

Popular choices in Rathfarnham and Blackrock include golden quartz (which suits redbrick), silver granite (which complements rendered and painted façades) and a warm toffee blend that works well with natural stone.

Other paving services in Rathfarnham and Blackrock

As well as resin bound driveways, we lay block paving, tarmac, porcelain patio tiles, natural stone patios, garden paths, steps and retaining walls. If you are not sure which surface suits your property best, the site visit is the place to talk it through — there is no obligation.

FAQ

How long does a resin driveway last in Dublin?

A properly installed resin bound driveway lasts 20–25 years with minimal maintenance. We use UV-stable resin to prevent yellowing and only install on a properly prepared base.

Can resin bound be laid over my existing tarmac in Rathfarnham?

Yes, provided the tarmac is level, sound and draining properly. We check the condition during the site visit and will tell you honestly whether an overlay is suitable or whether the base needs replacing.

Is resin bound slippery when wet?

No. The textured stone surface provides good grip in wet conditions. Resin bound actually performs better than smooth tarmac or polished concrete when wet because water drains through it rather than sitting on top.

Do you work in Booterstown and Mount Merrion?

Yes. We work across all of South Dublin including Booterstown, Mount Merrion, Stillorgan, Foxrock, Cabinteely and Deansgrange, as well as Rathfarnham, Templeogue, Churchtown and Dundrum.

What guarantee do you offer?

Every resin bound driveway we lay comes with a five-year written guarantee covering materials and workmanship. We use our own crew on every job — no subcontractors.
