A good patio or garden path should still look right in ten years. Platinum Paving Dublin designs and builds patios, garden paths, steps, raised beds and garden walls across South Dublin and North Wicklow, and every patio we lay carries a 5-year guarantee. This guide compares the main garden paving materials for Irish weather, explains what makes a patio last, and sets out typical costs and how to look after it.

Garden paving materials compared

  • Porcelain: our most popular patio choice. Frost-proof, non-slip, stain-resistant and never needs sealing, in large-format slabs with stone, wood and concrete effects.

  • Natural stone: Indian sandstone, silver and black granite, limestone and slate for a warmer, traditional look. It lasts a lifetime with occasional sealing.

  • Resin bound: a seamless, permeable, weed-free finish that flows into paths and pool surrounds with no joints.

  • Block paving: durable and cost-effective, and the natural choice if you want the patio to match a block-paved driveway.

The best material for garden paths

For paths, the main things are grip, drainage and weeds. Porcelain and resin bound are the lowest-maintenance choices: porcelain stays non-slip in the wet and never needs sealing, and resin bound has no joints at all, so weeds have nowhere to grow and water drains straight through. Natural stone and block paving work well too, provided the joints are properly filled. Gravel is cheap but migrates onto lawns and needs raking. We bring samples so you can compare them in your own garden.

What makes a patio last

It is the base and the bedding, not the slab, that decide whether a patio still looks right in ten years. We excavate to the correct depth, lay and compact a Type 3 or 804 hardcore sub-base, set the falls so rainwater runs away from the house, bed every slab on a full mortar or slurry-primed bed rather than spots, and finish with a proper jointing compound so weeds and ants cannot get in. Patios bedded on spots of mortar are the ones that rock, crack and hold water.

How much does a patio cost in Dublin?

As a rough guide only, a supplied-and-laid patio in the current Dublin market typically falls in the region of €90 to €150 per square metre for porcelain or natural stone, and less for block paving. Larger patios cost less per square metre. Steps, walls, drainage, lighting and the amount of excavation all affect the price, so every patio is priced after a free site visit. How to maintain a patio

  • Sweep regularly and keep drains, channels and gullies clear.

  • Wash down with water and a mild patio cleaner a couple of times a year; avoid harsh acids on natural stone.

  • Treat moss and algae in shaded corners early, before it makes the surface slippery.

  • Seal natural stone every few years if you want to keep its colour; porcelain does not need sealing.

  • Re-point any open or cracked joints promptly so weeds cannot take hold.

Planning and timescales

A patio at ground level in a private back garden is normally exempt development, provided it does not reduce the private open space behind the house below 25 square metres. Most patios are completed in three to five days, including excavation, a compacted sub-base, drainage and pointing.
