Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded Driveways: What Is the Difference?
Updated: Oct 10
If you have been pricing a resin driveway in Dublin or Wicklow you will have seen two very similar-sounding words: resin bound and resin bonded. They are not the same product, they do not perform the same way, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason we get called out to replace a resin driveway that is only a few years old. Here is the difference in plain English.
Resin bound: stone and resin mixed together, then trowelled
With a resin bound surface the aggregate (natural stone chippings, usually 1 to 5 mm) is mixed with a clear UV-stable resin in a forced-action mixer on site, then hand-trowelled onto a prepared base at around 15 to 18 mm thick. Every stone is coated in resin and the surface cures into a single smooth, seamless slab with tiny voids between the stones.
Those voids are the important bit. Rainwater drains straight through the surface into the base below, which is why resin bound is classed as a permeable, SuDS-compliant surface. It stays puddle-free, it does not ice over as easily in winter, and in most cases it does not need planning permission for a front driveway in Ireland. It is also completely smooth underfoot, so it suits wheelchairs, prams and bikes, and there is no loose stone to track into the house or the car.
Resin bonded: resin first, stone scattered on top
A resin bonded surface is made the other way round. A thin layer of resin is spread over the base and dry stone is scattered onto it while it is wet. The stone sticks to the resin but is not coated in it, so you get a rough, gravel-look finish about 3 to 6 mm thick.
Because there are no voids, resin bonded is not permeable. Water runs off it the same way it would run off tarmac or concrete, so you need falls and drainage, and it does not help with planning rules on new hard standing. Over time the loose top stones shed, especially where car tyres turn, and the surface can look patchy after a few winters.

Planning-friendly: Resin bound — Usually exempt; Resin bonded — Counts as impermeable
Loose stone: Resin bound — None; Resin bonded — Sheds over time
Typical lifespan: Resin bound — 20+ years on a sound base; Resin bonded — 5–10 years
Cost (market guide): Resin bound — Higher per m²; Resin bonded — Lower per m²
Which one should you choose?
For a driveway, path or patio that you want to last, resin bound is the right choice almost every time. It costs more per square metre up front, but it needs no re-gravelling, no sealing and almost no maintenance, and it can usually be laid straight over a sound existing concrete or tarmac base, which keeps the price and the disruption down.
Resin bonded has its place: it is a good anti-slip coating for ramps, steps and small areas where you want a textured finish and the base is already well drained. It is not what most homeowners mean when they ask for "a resin driveway".
What does a resin bound driveway cost in Ireland?
Every job is priced after a free site visit, because the size of the area, the condition of the existing base, edging and drainage all affect the price. As a rough guide only, in the current Dublin and Wicklow market a resin bound driveway typically falls in the region of €60 to €100 per square metre supplied and laid over a sound existing base, and more where a new sub-base is needed. Larger driveways cost less per square metre. Our full resin bound driveways page has the cost guide, colours and process in detail, and our resin driveway cost guide breaks the price down further.

FAQ
Is resin bound the same as resin bonded?
No. Resin bound mixes stone and resin together into a smooth, permeable surface; resin bonded scatters dry stone onto a layer of resin, giving a rough, non-permeable finish.
Which lasts longer, resin bound or resin bonded?
Resin bound. On a sound base with UV-stable resin it will typically last 20 years or more; resin bonded surfaces usually start shedding stone within 5 to 10 years.
Does a resin bound driveway need planning permission in Ireland?
Usually not. Because it is permeable it is normally exempt development for a front driveway, provided you are not creating a new entrance onto a public road.
Can resin bound be laid over my existing driveway?
Yes, if the existing concrete or tarmac is solid, well drained and free of major cracks. We check the base at the site visit.
